Range or stove repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Gas, electric and dual-fuel ranges

Your range is the busiest appliance in the kitchen, so a dead burner gets noticed fast. We repair gas, electric and dual-fuel ranges and stoves, freestanding, slide-in and professional-style, from Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Bertazzoni, Zline, GE, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool and Frigidaire.

On a gas range, most problems involve the igniters, the spark module, the burner valves or the burners themselves. On an electric range it's usually an element, an infinite switch, a terminal block or a control. Gas work calls for care, so we check every gas connection we touch before we leave. For the oven part of your range, see oven repair.

Common problems

When a burner won't light.

The stove problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Gas stove burner clicks but won't light

The spark is there but the flame doesn't catch: a dirty or wet igniter, a burner cap out of place or clogged burner ports are the usual causes. If it clicks constantly, even with the knob off, a switch is wet or failing, or the spark module is faulty.

Try this firstLet the burner cool, then reseat the cap and make sure every part is dry.

Stove igniter not clicking or sparking

When none of the burners click, the spark module or the range's power supply is usually at fault. When just one burner is silent, it's often a cracked igniter or a loose wire.

Try this firstMake sure the range is plugged in and the breaker hasn't tripped: gas ranges need power to spark.

Electric stove burner not heating, or only on high

A coil element that won't heat may be burned out or loose in its receptacle. One that only works on high usually has a failed infinite switch. On a glass top, a radiant element or its limiter can fail.

Try this firstSwap a coil element with a working one of the same size and see if the problem moves.

Yellow, uneven or lifting flame on a gas range

A healthy gas flame is blue with a small, steady inner cone. Yellow or orange flames, flames that lift off the burner, or uneven rings point to dirty or misaligned burners, blocked ports, or a gas pressure or conversion problem.

Try this firstClean the burner heads and caps and let them dry completely.

Stove knobs or touch controls not working

Worn burner valves, loose knobs and failed switches are common on older ranges. On newer models with touch controls, a control board, a keypad or a lockout setting can be the cause.

Try this firstCheck that the control lock isn't on.

A smell of gas

Don't use the range or any light switch. Leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside. Once the gas company has made it safe, we can repair the range.

Try this firstLeave first, then call from outside.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

A range typically lasts about 14 years, longer than most kitchen appliances, and igniters, spark modules, elements, switches and valves are worth replacing at almost any age. Professional-style ranges from Wolf, Viking and Thermador are usually well worth repairing.

On an older, basic electric range, a failed control board is the one repair where replacing may make more sense. The technician will give you the price before any work begins.

FAQ

Stove and range repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

Why does my gas stove keep clicking?

Constant clicking usually means moisture or food has reached a burner switch, or a switch has failed. Leave the burners off and let the cooktop dry for a day. If it keeps clicking, the switch or spark module needs replacing.

Do you repair Wolf, Viking and Thermador ranges?

Yes. We repair professional-style ranges from Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Bertazzoni and Zline, as well as everyday ranges from GE, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool and Frigidaire.

What should I do if a burner doesn't light?

Turn it off if it hasn't lit within a few seconds, and let the gas clear before trying again. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company from outside.

Do you repair the oven part of the range too?

Yes. Oven problems, like an oven that won't heat or bakes unevenly, are covered on our oven repair page, and one visit can cover both.

How much does stove repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your stove in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
