Water in the bottom, gritty dishes or a puddle on the floor: most dishwasher problems are a quick fix for a trained technician.

Dishwasher repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Built-in and drawer dishwashers

A dishwasher that leaves water in the bottom or gritty dishes on the rack is frustrating, but usually very repairable. We repair built-in, panel-ready and drawer dishwashers from Bosch, KitchenAid, Fisher & Paykel, Thermador, Whirlpool, GE, Samsung and LG.

Inside every dishwasher, a few parts do most of the work: the inlet valve lets water in, the heater warms it, the circulation pump drives it through the spray arms, and the drain pump takes it away. Add the filter, door latch, gasket and control board, and you have nearly every dishwasher repair. The technician tests them in your kitchen and explains what failed.

Common problems

Why your dishwasher won't drain.

The dishwasher problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Dishwasher not draining, water in the bottom

A clogged filter is the number one cause. After that: a blocked drain hose, a garbage disposal knockout plug that was never removed, an air gap full of debris, or a failed drain pump.

Try this firstTwist out and rinse the filter under the bottom rack, and run the garbage disposal before starting a cycle.

Dishwasher not cleaning dishes

Clogged spray arms, a dirty filter, low water from a failing inlet valve or a weak circulation pump can all leave food behind. Water that isn't hot enough, from a failed heater or a long pipe run from the water heater, is another cause.

Try this firstClear the spray arm holes with a toothpick, and run the kitchen tap until it's hot before you start.

Dishwasher leaking onto the floor

Most leaks come from a worn door gasket, a cracked spray arm, a loose connection under the tub, or suds from the wrong detergent. A leak under the door can also mean the dishwasher isn't level.

Try this firstUse dishwasher detergent only, never dish soap, and shut off the supply under the sink if the leak continues.

Dishwasher won't start, or stops mid-cycle

A door latch switch, a blown thermal fuse, a control board fault or a child lock left on can stop a dishwasher. Stopping mid-cycle can also be a fault the control has detected and is reporting with a code or flashing lights.

Try this firstMake sure the child lock is off and the door latches firmly.

Dishwasher not drying dishes

Many modern dishwashers dry by condensation and rely on rinse aid to work well. An empty rinse aid dispenser, a failed heating element or a vent fan that has stopped are the usual causes.

Try this firstFill the rinse aid and try the heated dry or extra dry setting.

Dishwasher error code or flashing lights

Dishwashers report faults with codes: a drain problem, a water supply issue, a heater fault, or a leak detected in the base. On a Bosch, for example, E15 means water has reached the base pan.

Try this firstWrite down the exact code and the model number before you call.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

A dishwasher typically lasts about 10 years. Drain pumps, inlet valves, latches, gaskets and heaters are worth replacing on most dishwashers, and premium models from Bosch, Thermador and Fisher & Paykel are usually worth repairing well into their second half of life.

If a basic dishwasher needs a new control board or circulation pump late in its life, replacing may be the better value. The technician will give you the price first and an honest opinion either way.

FAQ

Dishwasher repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

Is a little water in the bottom of a dishwasher normal?

A small amount around the filter is normal on many models; it keeps the seals moist. Standing water above the filter, or water that smells, means it's draining poorly.

What does E15 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?

E15 means water has collected in the dishwasher's base pan, usually from a leak inside, and the dishwasher has stopped to protect your floor. Drying the base clears the code, but the leak needs to be found and fixed or it will come back.

Do you repair dishwasher drawers?

Yes, including Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer models, as well as built-in and panel-ready dishwashers from every major brand.

Why does my dishwasher smell?

Food trapped in the filter or drain hose, or water left standing after a slow drain. Clean the filter and run a hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner; if water keeps sitting in the bottom, call us.

How much does dishwasher repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your dishwasher in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
