Microwave repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Over-the-range, built-in and drawer microwaves

We repair over-the-range microwaves, built-in and trim-kit microwaves, microwave drawers, convection microwaves and combination wall ovens from GE, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Samsung, LG, Bosch, Thermador and other brands.

A small countertop microwave is rarely worth a service call, but an over-the-range or built-in model is a different story: it's mounted or built in, often doubles as the range hood, and costs much more to replace and install. Common repairs include the magnetron, the high-voltage diode and capacitor, door switches, the turntable motor, and the vent fan and lights.

Common problems

Why it runs but doesn't heat.

The microwave problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Microwave not heating, but it runs

The turntable turns and the light is on, but food stays cold. That usually means the magnetron, which makes the microwaves, or the high-voltage diode or capacitor that powers it, has failed. A door switch can also cause it.

Try this firstDon't open the case: microwaves store a dangerous charge even when unplugged.

Microwave sparking or arcing inside

Sparks usually come from a burned or greasy waveguide cover (the small panel on the inside wall), chipped paint inside the cavity, or metal in the dish. Keep using it and the damage can spread to the magnetron.

Try this firstStop using it, switch it off at the breaker if you can't reach the plug, and wipe the inside once it's cool.

Microwave not working at all, no display

A blown internal fuse, often caused by a failing door switch, or a control board fault can leave a microwave completely dead.

Try this firstCheck the breaker and reset it if it has tripped.

Microwave stops when the door is touched

Microwaves use several door switches to make sure they never run with the door open. When one wears, the microwave stops, or won't start, if the door moves at all.

Try this firstMake sure nothing is stopping the door from closing fully.

Microwave turntable not turning

A worn turntable motor or a broken coupler under the tray stops the turntable, and food heats unevenly as a result.

Try this firstReseat the glass tray and the roller ring underneath.

Microwave vent fan or lights not working

On an over-the-range microwave, the vent fan and cooktop lights are part of the unit. A failed fan motor, a switch or the control board can stop them, and grease-clogged filters make the fan work harder.

Try this firstClean or replace the grease filters underneath the microwave.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

Microwaves typically last about nine years. A built-in or over-the-range microwave is usually worth repairing, especially when the fault is a door switch, a fuse, the turntable motor or the vent fan.

A magnetron replacement costs more, so on an older model the technician will help you weigh it against a new microwave, including the cost of installing one.

FAQ

Microwave repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

Is it safe to repair a microwave myself?

No. Microwaves store a dangerous high-voltage charge in the capacitor, even when unplugged. Internal repairs should always be left to a trained technician.

Is it worth repairing an over-the-range microwave?

Usually, yes. It's mounted above the range, often doubles as the range hood, and replacing it means removal and installation as well as the new unit. Door switches, fuses and fan motors are very reasonable repairs.

Do you repair microwave drawers?

Yes. We repair microwave drawers from Bosch, Thermador, KitchenAid, GE and other brands, as well as built-in and over-the-range models.

Why does my microwave turn off by itself?

Usually a worn door switch, a cooling fan that has stopped so the microwave overheats, or a control fault. Stop using it and call us if it happens more than once.

How much does microwave repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your microwave in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
