Range hood repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Wall, island and under-cabinet hoods

A working range hood keeps smoke, grease, steam and cooking smells out of your kitchen. We repair wall-mount chimney hoods, island hoods, under-cabinet hoods, insert hoods and downdraft vents from Zephyr, Viking, Wolf, Thermador, Bertazzoni, Zline and other brands.

Most hood repairs involve the blower motor, its capacitor, the fan speed switches or control board, and the lights. Weak suction is often not a failed part at all but clogged filters or a duct problem, so the technician checks the whole path, from the filters to the outside.

Common problems

When the hood won't clear the air.

The range hood problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Range hood fan not working

A failed blower motor, a motor capacitor, a speed switch or the control board can stop the fan. If the lights don't work either, the problem may be power to the hood.

Try this firstCheck the breaker, and see whether the lights still work.

Range hood weak suction, smoke left in the room

Clogged grease filters are the most common cause. Past that, a blocked or undersized duct, a stuck backdraft damper or a blower wheel caked with grease cut the airflow.

Try this firstSoak the metal filters in hot water and degreaser, or run them through the dishwasher.

Range hood loud rattling or humming

A loose blower wheel, worn motor bearings, a damper flapping in the duct or loose mounting screws can all make noise. A hum without the fan spinning often means a failed capacitor or a seized motor.

Try this firstMake sure the filters are seated properly.

Range hood lights not working

Burned-out bulbs or LED modules, worn sockets, a switch or the control board. Halogen hood lamps run hot and fail more often than LEDs.

Try this firstTry a new bulb of the right type first.

Range hood buttons or controls not responding

Grease and steam work their way into switches and touch panels over time. A switch, keypad or control board replacement usually fixes it.

Try this firstClean the controls gently with a damp cloth; never spray cleaner directly onto them.

Grease dripping from the hood

Grease drips when the filters are saturated, or when warm, moist air condenses in a cold duct and runs back down.

Try this firstClean the filters and the grease channels around them.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

Range hoods typically last around 14 years, and the parts that fail, motors, capacitors, switches and lights, are usually worth replacing, especially on a statement hood that's part of the kitchen design.

Replacing a hood can also mean changing the ductwork or the cabinetry if the new one doesn't match the old opening, which is one more reason repair is usually the better choice.

FAQ

Range hood repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

How often should range hood filters be cleaned?

Every one to three months for metal mesh and baffle filters, and more often if you cook a lot with oil. Charcoal filters on recirculating hoods can't be washed and are replaced instead.

Do you repair Zephyr range hoods?

Yes. We repair Zephyr, Viking, Wolf, Thermador, Bertazzoni and Zline hoods, as well as hoods from GE, KitchenAid and other brands.

Can you fix a downdraft vent?

Yes. Downdraft vents rise from behind the cooktop, and repairs usually involve the lift motor, a switch or the blower.

Why is my range hood so loud?

Some noise is normal on high, but rattling, grinding or a new hum usually means a loose blower wheel, worn motor bearings, or a damper flapping in the duct. Those are worth fixing before the motor fails.

How much does range hood repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your range hood in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
