Refrigerator repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Every kind of refrigerator

A refrigerator that stops cooling puts a week of groceries at risk, so we treat it as urgent. We repair every common design, from top-freezer and bottom-freezer models to French-door, side-by-side and four-door refrigerators, and the built-in and column refrigerators found in many Northern Virginia kitchens.

Most refrigerator problems trace back to a small number of parts: the fans that move cold air, the defrost system that keeps the coils clear, the start relay that gets the compressor going, and the valves and lines that feed the water dispenser and ice maker. The technician tests those parts in your kitchen and explains in plain words what failed.

Common problems

Why your fridge stopped cooling.

The refrigerator problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Refrigerator not cooling, but the light is on

The controls have power, so the fault is usually in how cold air is made or moved. A stalled condenser fan or dust-packed coils stop the compressor shedding heat, a failed evaporator fan keeps cold air from reaching the fresh-food side, and a worn start relay leaves the compressor clicking without starting.

Try this firstMake sure the temperature setting wasn't bumped, and clear anything blocking the vents inside.

Freezer cold, but the fridge is warm

Cold air reaches the fridge through a channel from the freezer. When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control fails, frost builds over the evaporator coil and blocks that channel, so the freezer stays frozen while the fridge slowly warms.

Try this firstLook for a thick layer of frost on the back panel inside the freezer.

Refrigerator leaking water

Water inside the fresh-food section usually means a clogged or frozen defrost drain, so melt water overflows instead of reaching the drain pan. Water on the floor can also come from the supply line, the inlet valve or the dispenser.

Try this firstCheck the fridge tilts slightly back, and shut off its water line if the leak is steady.

Refrigerator making noise: clicking, buzzing or a loud fan

A click every few minutes is often the start relay trying, and failing, to start the compressor. Scraping or chattering from the freezer usually means a fan blade is hitting ice, which points back to the defrost system. A worn condenser fan motor gets louder over time.

Try this firstNote how often the noise repeats and where it comes from. It speeds up the diagnosis.

Frost or ice building up inside

Frost on food and walls means warm, humid air is getting in, usually through a torn or flattened door gasket or a door that doesn't close fully. Heavy ice on the back panel points to the defrost system instead.

Try this firstClose the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out with no drag, the seal is weak.

Water or ice dispenser not working

A frozen line in the door, a failed water inlet valve, a clogged filter or a faulty dispenser switch are the usual causes. If the ice maker has stopped too, the inlet valve is the prime suspect.

Try this firstReplace the water filter if it's more than six months old.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

A refrigerator typically lasts about 13 years. Fans, defrost parts, relays, gaskets and valves are worth replacing on a fridge of almost any age, and high-end built-in refrigerators from brands like Sub-Zero and Thermador are usually worth repairing well past that.

The exception is a failed compressor or sealed refrigerant system on an older, standard fridge, where replacing often makes more sense. A good rule: if the fridge is past half its typical life and the repair would cost more than half the price of a new one, consider replacing. The technician will tell you honestly which way to go.

FAQ

Refrigerator repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

How long is food safe if my fridge stops cooling?

Keep the doors closed. According to USDA guidance, an unopened refrigerator keeps food safe for about four hours, and a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours (24 if half full). After that, move perishables to a cooler with ice.

Why is my refrigerator running all the time?

Dirty condenser coils, a weak door seal or a fan that isn't moving air are the usual causes. A fridge that runs nonstop and still isn't cold should be checked soon, because the compressor is working harder than it should.

Do you repair Sub-Zero and other built-in refrigerators?

Yes. We repair built-in and column refrigerators from Sub-Zero, Thermador, GE Monogram, Jenn-Air and KitchenAid, as well as freestanding models from Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE and Frigidaire.

Can you repair my refrigerator today?

Same-day refrigerator repair is available across Northern Virginia, depending on the day's schedule. A fridge that has stopped cooling is a priority, so call early in the day for the best chance.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your refrigerator in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
