Oven repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Gas, electric and wall ovens

We repair gas and electric ovens, single and double wall ovens, convection ovens and the ovens in freestanding and slide-in ranges, including the built-in ovens from Wolf, Thermador, Viking, KitchenAid, GE Monogram, Bosch and Frigidaire found in many Northern Virginia kitchens.

Oven repairs usually involve the bake or broil element on an electric oven, the igniter and gas valve on a gas oven, the temperature sensor, the convection fan, the door lock on self-cleaning models, or the control board. Each can be tested in your kitchen, so the technician can show you what failed before replacing it.

Common problems

Why your oven won't heat.

The oven problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Oven not heating

On an electric oven, a burned-out bake element, often with a visible break or blister, is the usual cause. On a gas oven, the igniter weakens with age until it can't open the gas valve. Control boards, sensors and thermal fuses come next.

Try this firstMake sure the clock is set and the oven isn't in a lock, demo or Sabbath mode.

Gas oven igniter glows but won't light

This is the classic weak-igniter symptom on a gas oven: the igniter glows, but it no longer draws enough current to open the safety valve. Less often, the gas valve itself has failed.

Try this firstGive it 90 seconds after turning it on; some gas ovens take that long to light.

Oven temperature off, or burning food

A failing temperature sensor, a worn door gasket letting heat escape, a weak element or a calibration offset can all throw the temperature off. Many ovens can be recalibrated once the sensor has been tested.

Try this firstCheck it with an oven thermometer at 350°F after 20 minutes.

Oven baking unevenly

On a convection oven, a failed convection fan or element leaves hot and cold spots. On any oven, a weak bake element, a broil element doing too much of the work, or a damaged door seal can cause uneven results.

Try this firstDon't line the racks or the oven floor with foil; it blocks the airflow.

Oven door locked after self-clean

The lock should release once the oven cools. If it's still locked hours later, the door lock motor, its switch or the control has failed, a common repair after a self-clean cycle.

Try this firstOnce it's cool, switch the oven off at the breaker for a minute to reset the control, then try again.

Oven error code on the display

Codes point to a sensor, door lock, keypad or control board fault. On many brands, F-codes relate to the temperature sensor or the control.

Try this firstWrite down the exact code and the model number.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

Ovens typically last about 14 years. Elements, igniters, sensors and door lock parts are worth replacing at almost any age. Control boards cost more, and on an older, basic range a failed board is the one repair where replacing might make more sense.

Built-in wall ovens are another case where repair usually wins, because a replacement has to fit the same cabinet opening. The technician will give you the price before any work begins.

FAQ

Oven repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

Why did my oven stop working after self-clean?

Self-clean runs the oven extremely hot for hours, which is hard on the door lock, the thermal fuse and the control board. If the oven won't heat or the door won't unlock after a cycle, one of those parts has usually failed.

Do you repair wall ovens?

Yes: single, double and combination wall ovens, gas and electric, from Wolf, Thermador, Viking, KitchenAid, GE Monogram, Bosch and other brands. Our wall oven repair page covers them in detail.

How long should a gas oven take to light?

Usually 30 to 90 seconds. If the igniter glows for longer and the oven never lights, the igniter is most likely too weak to open the gas valve.

Can you fix my oven before the holidays?

Call as early as you can. Same-day service is available across Northern Virginia depending on the schedule, and the weeks before Thanksgiving are among the busiest of the year.

How much does oven repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your oven in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
