Dryer repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Gas and electric dryers

A dryer that runs without heating, or takes two cycles to dry one load, costs you time and energy every week. We repair gas and electric dryers, stacked units and laundry centers from Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Samsung, Electrolux, Speed Queen, GE and other brands.

Dryers are simple machines, which makes them very repairable. Heat comes from an element (electric) or a burner with an igniter and gas valve (gas), and a set of thermostats and fuses keep it safe. The drum turns on rollers, a belt and an idler pulley. And everything depends on the vent, so the technician checks the airflow as part of every diagnosis.

Common problems

Why your dryer won't dry.

The dryer problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Dryer not heating

On an electric dryer, a failed heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a thermostat is the usual cause. On a gas dryer, it's often the igniter or the gas valve coils. A thermal fuse usually blows because the dryer overheated, often from a clogged vent, so we check that too.

Try this firstClean the lint screen, and check the outside vent flap opens while the dryer runs.

Dryer takes too long to dry

Long drying times are very often an airflow problem: a lint-packed vent, a crushed foil hose behind the dryer, or a long vent run. A heating element or thermostat that has partly failed can do the same.

Try this firstPull the dryer out and check the hose behind it for lint and kinks.

Dryer making noise: squeaking, thumping or grinding

Squeals usually come from worn drum rollers, the idler pulley or the drum glides. A thump on every turn can be a flat spot on a roller or a damaged belt, and grinding can mean a worn drum bearing or a coin caught at the drum seal.

Try this firstNote when the noise happens: at start-up, all the time, or only once it's hot.

Dryer won't start

A door switch, a broken drum belt (many dryers won't run without one), a blown thermal fuse or the start switch are the usual causes. Electric dryers use a double breaker, and one half can trip on its own.

Try this firstReset the breaker by switching it fully off, then back on.

Dryer shuts off before the load is dry

Sensor-dry models judge dryness through two metal strips inside the drum. When they're coated with fabric softener residue, the dryer thinks the load is dry too soon. An overheating motor or a thermostat cutting out on a restricted vent can also stop it early.

Try this firstWipe the metal sensor strips inside the drum with a little rubbing alcohol.

Burning smell from the dryer

Lint collects inside the cabinet as well as in the vent, and it can scorch near the heater. According to the NFPA, failure to clean is the leading factor in home dryer fires, so stop using the dryer until it has been checked.

Try this firstSwitch the dryer off until it has been cleaned and checked.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

A dryer typically lasts about 13 years, and most dryer repairs, from elements and igniters to belts, rollers and thermal fuses, are straightforward. That makes dryers one of the most worthwhile appliances to repair.

If an older dryer needs a new motor or control board, compare the price with a new machine. The technician will give you the price before any work begins, and an honest opinion if replacing makes more sense.

FAQ

Dryer repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

At least once a year, and more often for large households or long vent runs. Signs it's due: loads taking longer, the top of the dryer getting hot, or a burning smell.

Do you repair gas dryers?

Yes. We repair gas dryers, including igniters, gas valve coils, flame sensors and thermostats, and we check the gas connection before we leave. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company first.

Why is my dryer hot but the clothes are still wet?

That's almost always airflow: the heat is there, but the moist air can't get out. Check the vent hose and the outside flap. If they're clear, a sensor or heating fault may be the cause.

Can you repair a stacked washer and dryer?

Yes. We repair stacked units and laundry centers, including the dryer on top, which is often harder to reach for a homeowner.

How much does dryer repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your dryer in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
