Ice maker repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Refrigerator ice makers and ice machines

Most ice makers live inside the freezer or the refrigerator door, and they depend on everything around them: water pressure, the water filter, the inlet valve and a cold enough freezer. We repair ice makers in French-door, side-by-side, top-freezer and bottom-freezer refrigerators, plus undercounter ice machines from Scotsman, U-Line, Sub-Zero and others.

Undercounter ice machines are appliances in their own right: many make clear ice, and they have a condenser, a water system that needs regular cleaning, and a gravity drain or drain pump. When either kind stops working, the technician finds which part in the chain has failed and fixes that, rather than guessing.

Common problems

Why there's no ice.

The ice maker problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Ice maker not making ice, but the freezer is cold

Start with the water: a failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube or a clogged filter stops water reaching the ice maker. If water is arriving, the ice maker module, its motor or its thermostat may have failed.

Try this firstMake sure the ice maker's arm or switch is on, and that the freezer is around 0°F.

Small, hollow or cloudy cubes

Small or hollow cubes usually mean the ice maker isn't getting enough water, from low household water pressure, an old filter or a weak inlet valve. Cloudy ice is normal for most refrigerator ice makers; a clear-ice machine making cloudy ice needs cleaning or service.

Try this firstReplace the water filter and throw away the first few batches.

Ice maker leaking water

A cracked fill cup, a loose water line or an inlet valve that doesn't shut off fully can all leak, and the water often freezes into a sheet of ice under the ice maker or around the bin.

Try this firstShut off the water supply to the fridge if the drip is steady.

Ice jammed in the bin or dispenser

Cubes that melt and refreeze together jam the auger and the dispenser chute. That usually points to a freezer running warm, a defrost problem or a door that isn't sealing.

Try this firstEmpty the bin, break up the clump and check the door closes fully.

Ice that tastes or smells off

Old ice absorbs freezer odors, and an overdue filter or a dirty ice machine affects the taste. Undercounter machines need their water system cleaned and sanitized on a schedule.

Try this firstChange the filter, empty the bin and let a fresh batch fill it.

Undercounter ice machine making little or no ice

Undercounter machines slow down when the condenser is dusty, the water system is scaled or the drain is blocked. They also struggle in a hot room or a tight cabinet.

Try this firstClean the front grille and make sure nothing blocks the airflow.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

A refrigerator ice maker module typically lasts around eight years. Replacing a failed module, inlet valve or water line costs far less than a new refrigerator, so ice maker repairs are almost always worth doing.

Undercounter ice machines are a bigger investment, and with regular cleaning they're usually worth maintaining and repairing for many years. If yours needs a major part late in its life, the technician will help you weigh it up.

FAQ

Ice maker repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

Why did my ice maker stop after I changed the filter?

A filter that isn't fully seated, the wrong filter, or air in the line can stop the flow. Reseat the filter, then dispense a few glasses of water to purge the air. If there's still no ice after a day, call us.

How long does an ice maker take to make ice after a repair?

Usually 12 to 24 hours for the first ice, and a day or more for a full bin. Throw away the first few batches, especially after a new filter or water line.

Do you repair Scotsman and U-Line ice machines?

Yes. We repair undercounter ice machines from Scotsman, U-Line, Sub-Zero and other brands, as well as the ice makers built into refrigerators.

Can you fix the ice maker without replacing the fridge?

Almost always. The ice maker, inlet valve, water lines and dispenser parts are all replaceable on their own.

How much does ice maker repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your ice maker in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
