Garbage disposal repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Every brand and size of disposal

A garbage disposal that hums, jams or leaks under the sink is one of the most common kitchen calls, and usually one of the simplest. We repair continuous-feed and batch-feed disposals of every size and brand, including InSinkErator and Waste King.

Most disposal problems are a jam, a tripped reset, a worn seal or a switch. When the body of the unit is cracked or the motor has failed on an older disposal, replacing it is the better choice, and we'll tell you which it is before doing any work.

What we repair

  • Continuous-feed
  • Batch-feed
  • 1/3 to 1 horsepower units
  • Disposals connected to a dishwasher

Brands we repair: InSinkErator, Waste King and all major brands.

Common problems

Hums, jams and leaks.

The garbage disposal problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Garbage disposal humming but not spinning

Something hard is wedged between the turntable and the grind ring, or the motor has seized from sitting unused. A jam can usually be freed without any new parts.

Try this firstSwitch it off at the wall, never reach inside, and turn the hex key slot underneath back and forth.

Garbage disposal not working at all

The motor's overload has tripped and needs resetting, the wall switch or air switch has failed, or the motor has burned out.

Try this firstPress the red reset button on the bottom of the unit.

Garbage disposal leaking under the sink

Where it leaks tells you a lot. From the sink flange: the mounting or plumber's putty has loosened. From the dishwasher or drain connection: a loose clamp or worn gasket. From the bottom of the unit: the internal seals have failed and the unit needs replacing.

Try this firstDry the unit, put a bowl underneath, and watch where the first drip appears.

Garbage disposal jamming or grinding slowly

Worn grinding parts, a tired motor, or the wrong things going down the drain: fibrous peels, grease, coffee grounds and bones are the usual culprits.

Try this firstRun plenty of cold water while it's on, and for a few seconds after.

Sink draining slowly, or a bad smell

Food builds up in the grinding chamber, the drain trap or the rubber baffle. A sink that drains slowly even with the disposal running often has a partial clog further down the line.

Try this firstGrind a handful of ice cubes and some citrus peel to clean the chamber.

Dishwasher won't drain after a new disposal

A new disposal comes with a knockout plug in its dishwasher inlet. If it wasn't removed during installation, the dishwasher has nowhere to drain.

Try this firstCheck whether the disposal was replaced recently.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

A garbage disposal typically lasts around 12 years. Jams, resets, switches and loose connections are quick, inexpensive fixes and well worth doing.

A leak from the body of the unit, or a burned-out motor on an older disposal, means it's time to replace it. We'll tell you which it is before any work begins.

FAQ

Garbage disposal repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

Can I use drain cleaner in my garbage disposal?

No. Chemical drain cleaners can damage the disposal's seals and parts, and they're dangerous if the disposal has to be opened later. Call us instead.

Should I repair or replace my garbage disposal?

Repair it if it's jammed, tripped or has a loose connection. Replace it if the body is leaking or the motor has failed, especially on an older unit.

Where's the reset button on a garbage disposal?

On the bottom of the unit, usually a small red button. Switch the disposal off first, then press it firmly until it clicks.

What shouldn't go down a garbage disposal?

Grease and oil, bones, fibrous foods like celery and corn husks, large amounts of potato peels, pasta, rice or coffee grounds, and anything that isn't food.

How much does garbage disposal repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your garbage disposal in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
