Washer repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Every kind of washing machine

When a washer stops mid-cycle, the laundry piles up fast. We repair front-load, top-load and high-efficiency washers, stacked washer and dryer units and laundry centers from every major brand, from Speed Queen and Maytag to Samsung, LG, Electrolux and Whirlpool.

Most washer repairs come down to water going in, water going out, or the drum turning. Drain pumps, pump filters, lid switches and door locks, belts, motor couplings, shock absorbers, bearings and control boards all fail in predictable ways, and the technician tests each one so the repair fixes the cause, not just the symptom.

Common problems

Why your washer stopped mid-cycle.

The washer problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Washer not draining, water left in the drum

The most common cause is a blocked pump filter, where socks, coins and hair pins collect on front-loaders. Past that, the drain pump may have failed, or the drain hose may be kinked or clogged.

Try this firstOn a front-loader, open the small panel at the bottom front and clear the pump filter over a towel and a shallow pan.

Washer not spinning

A washer that can't drain won't spin either, so the drain comes first. After that, a worn lid switch or door lock, a broken belt or motor coupling, or an unbalanced load stopping the cycle are the usual causes.

Try this firstSpread the load evenly and run a drain-and-spin cycle.

Washer leaking water on the floor

On a front-loader, a torn or dirty door seal is the classic leak. Other sources are loose or cracked fill hoses, a leaking pump, or too much detergent foaming over. A leak from under the tub can mean a worn tub seal.

Try this firstTurn off the water valves behind the washer and check the door seal for tears or trapped items.

Washer shaking, banging or walking

Shaking that gets worse each week points to worn shock absorbers, suspension springs or drum bearings. Bearings are worth replacing early, before a failed bearing damages the tub or the seal.

Try this firstCheck the washer is level, and that the shipping bolts were removed if it's new.

Washer won't start, or the door stays locked

A door lock that won't engage or release, a lid switch, a control board fault or a simple power problem can stop a washer starting. A door still locked at the end of a cycle often means water is left in the drum.

Try this firstCheck the breaker and outlet. Some doors stay locked for a few minutes until the drum is empty and cool.

Musty smell from the drum or door seal

Front-loaders trap moisture in the door seal and the detergent drawer, and too much detergent, or regular detergent instead of HE, makes it worse. If the smell persists after cleaning, the drain or pump may be holding stagnant water.

Try this firstWipe the seal after washing, leave the door ajar, and run a hot cleaning cycle.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

A washer typically lasts about 11 years. Pumps, lid switches, door locks, belts and shock absorbers are reasonable repairs on a washer of almost any age. Bearings and control boards cost more, so for those the age of the machine matters more.

If a washer is past half its typical life and the repair would cost more than half the price of a new one, replacing usually makes more sense. Heavy-duty machines like Speed Queen are often worth repairing for longer. The technician will give you an honest opinion before any work starts.

FAQ

Washer repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

Why won't my front-load washer door open?

The door stays locked while there's water in the drum and for a short time after the cycle. If it stays locked with an empty drum, the door lock or the control has likely failed. Don't force it: the latch breaks easily.

Should I replace my washer's fill hoses?

Rubber fill hoses can bulge and burst with age and flood a laundry room in minutes. Check them once a year, and replace them with braided stainless steel hoses at the first sign of a bulge or crack.

Do you repair Speed Queen washers?

Yes. We repair Speed Queen, Maytag, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, Electrolux, GE and Frigidaire washers, top-load and front-load.

Can you come today for a washer that won't drain?

Same-day washer repair is available across Northern Virginia, depending on the day's schedule. Call early in the day, and if water is leaking, turn off the valves behind the washer first.

How much does washer repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your washer in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
