Freezer repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Upright, chest and built-in freezers

A freezer full of food is worth protecting. We repair upright freezers, chest freezers, built-in freezer columns and freezer drawers, plus the freezer section of every type of refrigerator, including the garage freezers that face Northern Virginia's summer heat and winter cold.

Freezer problems usually come from the thermostat or temperature sensor, the defrost system on frost-free models, the door gasket, the evaporator or condenser fan, or the compressor's start components. The technician tests each one, shows you what failed and gives you the price before starting the repair.

Common problems

When the freezer can't keep up.

The freezer problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Freezer not freezing, or food going soft

If the freezer has power but isn't cold, the usual suspects are the compressor's start relay or overload, a failed evaporator or condenser fan, or a faulty thermostat or sensor. Sometimes the cause is in the sealed refrigerant system, which the technician will explain clearly before you decide anything.

Try this firstMove food to another freezer or a cooler, and check the dial or display wasn't changed.

Freezer frosting up on the walls or back panel

On a frost-free freezer, heavy frost means the defrost cycle has stopped, usually because of a defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control. Frost around the door opening points to a worn gasket letting humid air in.

Try this firstClose the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, the seal is weak.

Freezer running all the time

A freezer that never shuts off is working too hard. Dirty condenser coils, a weak door seal, a failing fan or a thermostat that never reaches its set point are the common causes, and the extra running wears out the compressor.

Try this firstIf you can reach them safely, unplug the freezer and vacuum the coils.

Freezer struggling in a garage or basement

Freezers are designed for a certain room temperature range. In an unheated garage in winter some models barely run, and in summer heat they run nonstop. If yours struggles with the seasons, we'll check whether it's a fault or the location.

Try this firstLook in the manual for the model's rated temperature range, or a garage-ready label.

Freezer making loud humming or clicking

A click that repeats every few minutes usually means the compressor is trying to start and failing, often because of a relay or overload. A buzz or rattle can come from a fan motor, or a fan blade touching ice.

Try this firstNote when the noise happens and how often.

Freezer leaking water, or ice on the floor

Melt water from the defrost cycle should run to a drain pan underneath. A blocked defrost drain sends it into the cabinet instead, where it freezes into a sheet of ice on the freezer floor.

Try this firstWipe it up and watch how quickly it returns.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

Upright and chest freezers typically last about 11 years. Thermostats, fans, gaskets, relays and defrost parts cost far less than a new freezer, so most of those repairs are worth doing, and built-in freezer columns are worth repairing for much longer.

A failed compressor or refrigerant leak on an older, basic chest freezer is the case where replacing usually makes more sense, and the technician will tell you so before any work begins.

FAQ

Freezer repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

How long will food stay frozen if my freezer stops?

Keep the door shut. According to USDA guidance, a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24. Food that still has ice crystals, or is at 40°F or below, can be safely refrozen.

Why does my freezer keep frosting up?

Either humid air is getting in, through a worn gasket or a door left ajar, or a frost-free freezer's defrost system has stopped working. Chipping the frost away only buys time; the cause needs fixing so it doesn't come back.

Do you repair chest freezers?

Yes: chest freezers, upright freezers, built-in freezer columns and freezer drawers from Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool, Electrolux, Sub-Zero, U-Line and other brands.

Can a freezer be fixed if the compressor fails?

Sometimes, but compressor and refrigerant repairs are the most expensive freezer repairs. On a high-end built-in they're often worth it; on an older standard freezer, replacing is usually better value. The technician will explain the options and the price before you decide.

How much does freezer repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your freezer in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
