A gas cooktop burner repaired by E&A technicians in Northern Virginia

Gas cooktops, electric cooktops and rangetops

A built-in cooktop sits in the counter or an island, separate from the oven, and it's often the centerpiece of the kitchen. We repair gas cooktops, electric glass-top and coil cooktops, downdraft cooktops and professional-style rangetops from Wolf, Thermador, Viking, Bertazzoni, Zline, GE Monogram, KitchenAid, Bosch, GE and Frigidaire.

Gas cooktops share most of their parts with gas ranges: igniters, a spark module, valves and burners. Electric cooktops use radiant elements under the glass, infinite switches or touch controls, and a control board. The technician tests each part, explains what failed and gives you the price before starting.

Common problems

Why the cooktop won't heat.

The cooktop problems we're called for most, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before we arrive.

Gas cooktop burner won't light

Clicking without a flame usually means a dirty, wet or cracked igniter, a misplaced burner cap or clogged ports. On sealed-burner cooktops, a spill that runs under the cap can block the igniter until it dries.

Try this firstLet it cool, clean and dry the cap and burner head, and reseat the cap so it sits flat.

Cooktop igniter clicking nonstop

If the igniters click with every knob off, moisture has reached a switch, or a switch or the spark module has failed. A deep clean with too much water is a common trigger.

Try this firstLeave the burners off and let the cooktop dry for a day.

Glass cooktop burner not heating

Each radiant element sits under the glass with a limiter that protects it from overheating. A burned-out element, a failed limiter, an infinite switch or a control fault can leave one zone cold.

Try this firstCheck whether the hot-surface light comes on when that zone is turned on.

Cooktop touch controls not responding

Touch-control cooktops lock out when there's water or a pan on the control area, or when the control lock is on. If they stay unresponsive, the touch control or the control board may have failed.

Try this firstDry the control area and check the lock isn't on.

Cracked glass cooktop

A crack lets spills reach the elements and wiring underneath. Stop using the cooktop and switch off its breaker. On most models the glass top can be replaced as a part, without replacing the whole cooktop.

Try this firstSwitch off the cooktop's breaker until it has been repaired.

Weak, yellow or uneven flame on a rangetop

Professional rangetops have large burners with many ports. Grease or spills in the ports, a misaligned burner or a gas pressure problem can give a weak, yellow or uneven flame.

Try this firstClean the ports with a stiff brush or a straight pin, never a toothpick that can snap off inside.

Repair or replace

Is it worth fixing?

An honest answer, and the price, before any work starts.

Cooktops typically last as long as ranges, around 14 years. Because they're built into the counter, replacing one can mean cutting or patching the countertop if a new model doesn't fit the same opening, which makes repair even more attractive than usual.

Igniters, switches, elements, limiters and spark modules are all reasonable repairs. A new glass top or control board costs more, and the technician will give you the price before any work begins.

FAQ

Cooktop repair questions

Still unsure? Call (571) 268-5367 and ask a real person.

Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?

The glass itself can't be patched, but on most models the glass top can be replaced as a part without replacing the whole cooktop. We'll check part availability for your model.

Do you repair Wolf and Thermador rangetops?

Yes. We repair professional-style rangetops and gas cooktops from Wolf, Thermador, Viking, Bertazzoni and Zline, and cooktops from GE Monogram, KitchenAid, Bosch, GE and Frigidaire.

Do you repair induction cooktops?

Call us with the brand and model number, and we'll tell you straight away whether we can help with that model.

Is a cooktop repair different from a range repair?

The parts are largely the same, but a cooktop is built into the counter and wired or plumbed separately from the oven. We repair both, and our stove and range repair page covers freestanding and slide-in ranges.

How much does cooktop repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. The technician diagnoses your cooktop in your home, explains the problem and gives you the price before any work begins, so you decide. Call (571) 268-5367 for the current service call fee.
